WARNING:If you do this, work on a _COPY_ of Red Ryder 10 , not the original, or the only copy of Red Ryder you have...if you make a mistake, you can damage the copy, and at worst, only have to start over on a fresh copy...
If you open the SIZE-0 resource in Red Ryder 10 using the latest Version of ResEdit, you will see the following entrys in the dialog for the size-0 resource. Followed by several reserve bits, if you scroll down, with the maximum and minimum Memory size settings at the bottom of the dialog. Each bit has a setting for "0" or "1".
To insure that Red Ryder 10 will work properly in the background under MultiFinder, the following settings must be set as indicated:
Save Screen - 1
Accept Suspend events - 1
Disable option - 0
Can Background - 1
Juggler Aware - 1
Only Background - 0
If you wish with ResEdit, you can CUT the SIZE-0 resource from Red Ryder 10, and replace it with the one in this file. This is the one from my copy of Red Ryder that works in the background just fine for me. It is set to use 600K of ram, you may want to adjust this using the Get Info Dialog in MultiFinder to your preferred setting.
Procedure:
1. Open ResEdit, Locate Red Ryder 10 and open the Red Ryder 10 file by double-clicking on Red Ryder 10, this will open another small window listing all the resources that Red Ryder 10 contains.
2. Locate the SIZE resource in Red Ryder 10, and select it, so its highlighted, then select CUT or CLEAR from the EDIT menu, this will delete the SIZE resource from Red Ryder.
3. Locate and open the "SIZE-0 RR" File, and double-click to open it and select the SIZE resource so it is highlighted, then select COPY from the EDIT menu.
4. Locate and select the the Window that is listing the Red Ryder 10 resources, and select PASTE from the EDIT menu. This will paste the new SIZE resource into your copy of Red Ryder 10.
5. Click the close box for Red Ryder 10 and ResEdit will prompt you to save the changes, go ahead and do this and this should effectively allow Red Ryder to operate properly in the background under MultiFinder.
Notes:
Earlier versions of ResEdit will let you make these modifications, but if you open the SIZE-0 resource, you may not see the information as listed above, since newer versions of ResEdit changed the template that displays the information in the SIZE resource dialog.
Sometimes you may see a SIZE -1 resource, it is exactly the same, just a different ID #, and if you delete it, the SIZE-0 resource will work just fine.
The Paint file included shows the dialog of the SIZE-0 that was in my copy of Red Ryder 10.3 and the important settings for background operation.
This was done with a current version of ResEdit 1.2d0. This version of ResEdit is out there, but the last official Apple release was ResEdit 1.1d3 and Apple is not allowing the posting of ResEdit 1.2d0 to services and other distribution points I guess until a more current version is released. I have seen ResEdit 1.2d0 on some local BBS's. Apple is not supporting its use, but it works fine for me.
As mentioned, previous versions of ResEdit will do the job just fine. If you have 1.1d3, I think the dialog display is the same and one should be able to make the settings in the SIZE resource per the paint file, and Red Ryder should run in the background successfully as well.
